5G Use Cases

Jul. 30, 2021

We have been spreading the word about this upcoming technology, and this is our third article in a 5G series. We hear a lot about 5G, on TV, on different websites, social media advertisements, you name it. While all this discussion is good, what can we do with 5G technologies, and how can it make a difference for us? Let’s explore some practical use cases for 5G through the lens of different sectors.

Manufacturing

We have come a long way since the first Industrial Revolution when steam and water powered our mechanical systems. Now enter in the era of advanced manufacturing, better known by many as the fourth Industrial Revolution. This iteration brings us AI, robotics, IoT, 3D printing and fuses them with the physical world around us. There will be a whole new era of technologies created as a result. However, these technologies will need speed to function correctly. 5G will be the catalyst for this, and as a result, manufacturers will see:

    • Industrial automation in different process elements
    • Improved condition monitoring
    • Predictive analytics for breakdowns and downtime

Healthcare

Our healthcare workers recognize how technology can be a tremendous tool to help them accomplish their tasks. Even from an administrative standpoint, there is countless patient information that needs to be sorted through each day. This information isn’t just for billing purposes; it can be used in critical moments as well.

A good example of this is 5G’s ability to foster interconnectedness, which has translated well into healthcare. Consider ambulances that are fixed with the ability to deliver lifesaving data to a member inside. In theory, an ambulance would arrive, pick up a patient, and then have the ability to access this patient’s medical records almost instantly. From there, the caregiver can make more informed decisions thanks to the additional context.

Finance

The financial industry is no doubt a key component in the way our society functions. There are some fundamentals in this industry that experts have tried to master physically. Dealing with large amounts of money, storing money, transferring money to the right person who verifies they are who they say they are. Carrying these fundamentals over to a digital environment can be a challenge.

A solution to this problem would be blockchain and 5G. Blockchain is a digital ledger that records transactions and populates to everyone’s system on the chain. It is a form of accountability that makes it very difficult to alter dishonestly.

Here is one example “…when a goods’ laden ship reaches a port (the docking goods would be fitted with IoT sensors), the ledger or smart contract would be altered. Once a shipment had been received by a distributor from a manufacturer, the contract would be altered again, and payment triggered.”

Transportation

Transportation infrastructure is quite a gift. When we take time to reflect on it, we recognize the vast impact it has had. Yes, there is some natural wear of use (We are talking to you potholes), but people are working hard to revamp our transportation infrastructure. In the Era of 5G, this is known as the smart city.

5G will assist in creating an active traffic management system. This system aims to bring relief to traffic congestion by improving mobility and safety during peak commute times. The positive effect is that money won’t have to be dumped into building new roadways. Instead, the focus shifts to managing current ones.

Widespread Connection

There are many sectors not included in this article; it is by no means exhaustive. One thing is for sure, 5G will bring widespread connection to people. If you are interested in these topics and want to learn more, let’s have virtual coffee and chat!
